Kickin’ It with Kids in Keystone, South Dakota

Image
South Dakota’s Black Hills are filled with small towns that pack a big punch. The area has plenty of  gorgeous landscapes and fun family activities that will leave you wondering about the next town over. Possibly the most visited town is Keystone, home to the famous Mount Rushmore. Although the granite faces are a fun pastime, Keystone has so much more to offer traveling families. Mount Rushmore’s Many Faces Most families that visit Keystone will do so to see the large granite faces of Mount Rushmore . Carved into the side of Harney Peak, the memorial features past presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. While the monument is an interesting sight and will capture children’s interest, it won’t last for too long. But there are some other things your family can do at the memorial. The on-site Lincoln Borglum Museum will teach you and your brood about how the monument was carved , with windows overlooking the sculpture so you can spot the t...

Mexico City Guide: Centro Histórico, San Angel + Coyoacán, Condesa + Roma

Image
Mexico City is one of the best-kept travel secrets out there. Often mispresented as dangerous, the city has emerged – through public initiatives and its ambitious inhabitants – as a vibrant, invigorating city that’s a pleasure to explore. In fact, after recently graduating from the Sorbonne in Paris last spring, I now call Mexico City my full-time home. With roughly 21 million residents, it’s one of the largest cities in the world, and each of its neighborhoods, or colonias , offers a very different experience. Centro Histórico : Historic + Bustling The Centro Histórico is Mexico City’s original core, built on Aztec ruins dating back to 1325. Walk its cobblestoned streets to admire its mix of colonial and European architecture while being tempted by shops and street vendors. Here, Mexico’s past is celebrated within the prism of the future. First-time visitors should not miss  Palacio de Bellas Artes ,  a white marble palace with murals by the Mexican greats; Templo Mayor , the rem...

The Transformative Power of Mii Amo Spa Resort

Image
By Becca Hensley The task before me appears simple. But, it also seems like my life depends on it. I am hypnotized by a wall festooned with 102 identical flacons, each filled with a scintillating, colored liquid. “Squint your eyes,” says Bhakta Ruttiger, an Aura-soma practitioner at Mii Amo, a destination spa in Sedona, Arizona. I feel her urge me forward – and, suddenly driven, I grab a bottle filled with emerald green liquid. Bhakta, whom I first met 15 years ago on my first visit to Mii Amo, and now reconvene with, nods knowingly. “Next bottle,” she gently orders. I seize another container, this one a bold violet. Increasingly confident, I choose two more, almost carelessly – or so I think. Then, I follow Bhakta into an austere treatment room. Here, she explains the results of my choices, the nuances of something as seemingly simple – and telling – as color. She first reminds me about the provenance of this energy therapy, devised by Englishwoman Vicky Wall, a blind pharmacist a...

My Quest to Find All of the LOST Filming Sites in Oahu

Image
I have an obsessive personality. When I say obsessive, I MEAN obsessive. One of my biggest obsessions to date was that of the TV show LOST. I spent hours everyday watching episodes, going on fansites, formulating theories, buying weird LOST related items on eBay – I was totally crazy for the show. And what better way to feed my obsession than by going to see the exact place where LOST is filmed. Fortunately, my boyfriend at the time was equally as infatuated with the show as I was, so we booked our tickets for Hawaii, and we were off! Not wanting to spend our whole holiday running around squealing because we’d found a restaurant where a character once ate (trust me… I’d do that), we decided to limit our time to spend just 48 hours driving around searching for as many LOST filming sites as possible. There are hundreds of resources online giving maps and directions to near enough every filming spot, so it wasn’t too hard finding all of these places. What w...
